The Unrest of WarNagasaki-resized

This summer Japan marked 70 years since the end of the war. For 70 years Japan has been blessed with peace. Many people today did not experience World War II but have inherited peace from parents who did experience its horrors.

On the other hand, wars continue to rage all around the world. We do not know how long Japan will be able to enjoy these years of peace; we have to wonder how long it will be before Japan is embroiled in war again. The Bible teaches that we should love God with all our heart and our neighbor as ourself. If all people were to keep these commands, this world would be able to maintain peace. But this is not the best peace of all.

The Old Testament records how God chose the descendants of Abraham (the Israelites) to be His chosen people. God made a covenant with them. In this covenant God promised to protect them from any unbelieving nation that made war with them. God promised to bless them. As long as they remained faithful to God, Israel would be blessed with peace.

But the believing Israelites got old and the next generation forsook God, worshiped idols, and invited God’s wrath. For this reason, God withdrew His protecting hand when enemies came to attack. The Israelites experienced many decades of hardship. When this hardship led the Israelites to repent of their sins, God remembered His promises to the Israelites and delivered them. The Bible records a recurring cycle of sin, hardship, repentance, and God’s grace. And the same cycle happens in our lives too.

The world ignores God’s offer of peace with Him. Human beings are interested in peace between nations on earth, but the most important thing is peace between God and mankind. Do you have peace in your life? True peace is found through the message of the Bible. Please look for true peace there. Do all you can to receive it.
