“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you” (Romans 12:3).

People tend to think highly of themselves and to think more highly of some than others.  But this is not pleasing to God. Different people have been given different gifts, but under God’s grace we must respect all people, and think of them as being higher than ourselves. To help us remember this God often uses humble saints in great ways. On the morning when Jesus rose from the dead, Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene before appearing to his mother Mary and the disciples. The disciples deserted Jesus when he was captured, but the thief on the cross believed in him. To him Jesus gave the guarantee of going to heaven. Through such circumstances God is teaching us always to consider others better than ourselves.

Prayer: Dear God the Father, take away my sinful pride and lead me to live a life filled with sober judgment. Amen.
